CompuType IT Technician Matt Bjornstad recently spoke to members of the Millstadt Chamber of Commerce about the growing daily threats facing both personal and business technology. His presentation focused on real-world risks that organizations of all sizes encounter, including virus infections, ransomware attacks, hardware failure, fire, water damage, severe storms, and other unexpected events that can result in data loss and costly downtime.
During the discussion, Matt outlined CompuType’s disaster recovery process and emphasized the importance of having a proactive plan in place before an emergency occurs. He explained that too many businesses assume data loss will never happen to them — until it does. Without a reliable backup and recovery strategy, even a small incident can bring operations to a complete halt.
Matt strongly encouraged all attendees to implement daily backups and to follow best practices for data protection. This includes maintaining three copies of important data:
Two backups stored onsite (such as on separate devices or systems)
One backup stored offsite or in the cloud for protection against physical disasters
This layered approach ensures that data remains protected even if a business experiences theft, fire, flooding, or equipment failure.
In addition to backups, Matt discussed the importance of strong cybersecurity habits, including the use of reputable antivirus and anti-malware software, keeping systems updated, and being cautious with email. He reminded attendees that many cyber incidents begin with a simple phishing email and advised users to only open messages and attachments from people they recognize and trust.
The good news, Matt shared, is that with proper backups in place, CompuType can typically restore critical data and systems within a day following a data loss event or ransomware attack. This can make the difference between a temporary inconvenience and a devastating business disruption.
